The most popular BMW model range, the BMW 3 Series, has been awarded the ‘Best Compact Executive’ title by ‘WhatCar?’ magazine for the fourth consecutive year, having scooped it in 06, 07 and 08. Moreover, all three cars shortlisted for the 2009 award were BMW 3 Series Saloon models; while the 318i ES and 330d SE were nominated, the 320d ES took the crown. A substantial revision to the 3 Series Saloon and Touring range last September will surely have swayed this year’s outstanding success. In a special awards report, ‘WhatCar?’ wrote: “Not only is [the 3 Series] awesomely talented in every area, but it's also class-leading in most – by a mile.” And with the 320d Saloon accelerating from zero to62 mph in 7.9 seconds, yet still returning 58.9mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of just 128g/km, the 3 Series is, as ‘WhatCar?’ says: “the real deal: it's hard to see it being beaten any time soon.”This latest honour is in addition to a string of awards for the 3 Series in 2008.
